Europe halved Chinese hybrids. Renault is safe, Stellantis exposed.

Not investment advice.

Line chart of European carmakers and BYD rebased to 100 at the close of 2025-12-31: Renault down 19%, Volkswagen down 31%, BMW down 40%, Stellantis down 58%, BYD down 22%, Stoxx Europe autos down 20%. A dashed line marks the EU-China hybrid import deal on 2026-10-10.

Europe just cut Chinese hybrid imports by more than half.
Every European carmaker is on the same side of that deal.
Their shareholders are not.

Over the weekend the EU and China reached a preliminary agreement on hybrid exports. Chinese brands had taken close to 12% of the European market on 770,000 imported cars in eight months. The deal halves the hybrid part and favours cars assembled in Europe.

The obvious read is relief for everyone. The graph says the relief is not shared.

Renault welcomed the deal and is lobbying for strict Made-in-Europe content rules. It sells almost nothing in China, so there is little for Beijing to retaliate against. Its Dacia Spring starts under 18,000 euros, and it is putting 10 billion euros into French plants.

Stellantis, owner of Jeep, Peugeot and Fiat, gets the same relief on paper. But its low-cost electric plan runs on Leapmotor technology, a Chinese partner, and the graph records its exposure to Chinese rare earths. The stock is down 58% this year for reasons the deal does not touch.

Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes sell into China. For them every trade deal has two sides.

Clargus found the split by tracing the deal to the carmakers it reaches: Renault's edges say "welcomed" and "benefits from", Stellantis's say "relief" and "exposed to".

My read: with the sector down 20% this year, this is the first policy event that sorts the makers by where their parts come from, and the tape has not sorted them yet.

What proves this wrong: monthly European registrations. If Chinese brand share keeps rising through local assembly, the deal changed the route, not the outcome.

The question is not who the deal helps. It is who it cannot hurt.
