SpaceX bought spectrum, and T-Mobile fell 13% in a day

Not investment advice.

Line chart rebased to 100 at the close of 2026-09-15: T-Mobile down 16%, AT&T down 15%, Verizon down 16%, AST SpaceMobile down 12%, S&P 500 up 3%. Dashed lines mark the carriers’ satellite joint venture on 2026-10-02 and SpaceX buying 800 MHz spectrum on 2026-10-09, when the three carriers fell 9 to 13% in one session.

Your phone company lost 13% in one day.
Not because of earnings. Because a rocket company bought radio spectrum.

On Friday SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of low-band spectrum from Grain Management. The plan has a name, Starlink Mobile, a date, 2027, and a stated target: take customers from AT&T and the other carriers. T-Mobile fell 13%, AT&T 10%, Verizon 9%.

The part most people missed came one week earlier. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T had just formed a satellite joint venture of their own, and Verizon and AT&T prepay AST SpaceMobile for satellite coverage. On Friday SpaceX outbid AST for the same band. The carriers' answer to Starlink lost the spectrum to Starlink, and AST fell with them.

Clargus had the carriers flagged from the SpaceX IPO filing, through a competes-with edge to Starlink, before Friday gave the edge a price.

What the market sold is pricing power. Verizon raised its 2026 earnings guidance the next day and yields 6.8% after the drop. AT&T's chief executive called the plan not feasible and pointed at his $3 billion fiber order with Corning as the answer. Both answer a carrier with no customers, no handset path announced, and no FCC approval yet.

My read: repricing three businesses in a day on a competitor eighteen months out is a guess. The guess has a date: the FCC decision on the Grain spectrum, expected within a month.

What proves this wrong: FCC approval without conditions and a Starlink Mobile price below postpaid plans. Then Friday was the start, not the overreaction.

The question is not whether Starlink can build a carrier. It is whether a 6.8% yield already pays you to wait and find out.
