USE CASE

# Know when your thesis breaks

Investment thesis monitoring is the practice of writing down the assumptions behind a position and checking each one as new filings, events and prices arrive. A thesis is holding while its assumptions hold, weakened when one is under pressure, and broken when a core one fails.

## Why theses go stale

Most theses are written once, in a memo, and revisited at earnings or when the price moves. Between those moments the evidence keeps changing: a supplier warns, a regulator consults, a competitor cuts prices. By the time anyone rereads the memo, the reason to hold may have changed weeks ago.

The problem is not a lack of news. It is that the news is not connected to the specific assumption it affects.

## How to monitor a thesis

A thesis can be monitored once it is broken into parts that evidence can confirm or contradict.

- Write the thesis in one sentence: what you expect to happen, and why.
- List the assumptions it rests on, each one specific enough to be wrong.
- Tie each assumption to the companies, markets and sources that would show it changing.
- Decide in advance what would weaken it and what would break it.
- Re-check each assumption when new evidence touches it, and record the reason.

## When is a thesis broken?

A thesis is broken when an assumption it cannot do without fails, not when the price falls. A price move is a prompt to look; the evidence decides. Writing the falsifiers down before you invest keeps that judgment honest.

## An example

A thesis on a packaging company rests on three assumptions: input costs stay stable, its largest customer keeps growing volumes, and new capacity comes online on schedule. Months later, the largest customer reports that it is shifting part of its packaging to a cheaper material.

The customer assumption is now under pressure, so the thesis is marked weakened, with the customer’s statement as the source. The other two assumptions still hold. The investor decides whether to wait for the next order data, resize, or rewrite the thesis.

Illustrative example. The companies are not real, and nothing on this page is investment advice.

## How Clargus monitors theses

In the Clargus research workspace you write a thesis and the assumptions it rests on, and Clargus links each assumption to the companies and evidence behind it in the knowledge graph. When a filing, event or price move touches an assumption, the thesis is re-checked and marked as holding, weakened or broken, with the reason and the source. You decide what to do next.

FAQs

## Questions about this use case

### What is an investment thesis tracker?

A tool that keeps each thesis with its assumptions and checks them against new evidence, so you can see which theses are holding, weakened or broken, and why.

### How often should a thesis be reviewed?

Whenever new evidence touches one of its assumptions, not only at earnings. Tying each assumption to its sources is what makes that practical.

### Does Clargus decide when to exit a position?

No. Clargus marks a thesis as holding, weakened or broken and shows the evidence. Every investment decision stays with you.
